What are Icebreakers?

An icebreaker is a conversational activity or exercise designed to help people get to know each other and feel more comfortable in a social or professional setting. The goal is to break down social barriers, encourage interaction, and create a more relaxed and open atmosphere.

The word “icebreakers” usually conjures up a mental image of an awkward conversation, boring questions, and wishing you were just about anywhere else. But let’s reframe what fun icebreaker questions can do for your organization and your team!

Why Do We Need Icebreakers?

Icebreakers are essential for several reasons, especially in settings where individuals need to interact, collaborate, or communicate effectively. Icebreakers are valuable tools for facilitating introductions, building connections, encouraging participation, reducing anxiety, enhancing communication, boosting energy, stimulating creativity, improving group dynamics, setting a positive tone, and identifying common interests. These benefits contribute to more effective and enjoyable interactions in both professional and social settings.

20 Fun Icebreaker Questions/Activities for Team Meetings

With the end of the pandemic, more companies require their employees to work five days in the office, so in-person meetings are back in common and maybe after a long time not seeing colleagues in person, we may feel awkward at the very beginning to have many people in a room. So, let’s prepare some icebreaker questions/activities to help you lay off your guard and connect with your team. Here we go!

Icebreaker Questions:

1. Two Truths and a Lie:

  • Have each small team member share two true statements and one false statement about themselves. Others must guess which one is the lie.

2. What's Your Favorite...?:

  • Ask everyone to share their favorite book, movie, food, or vacation spot.

3. Would You Rather?:

  • Pose a series of "Would you rather?" questions, such as "Would you rather travel to the past or the future?"

4. Bucket List Item:

  • Have each person share one item from their bucket list.

5. Superpower Wish:

  • Ask, "If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?"

6. Childhood Dream Job:

  • Have team members share what they wanted to be when they were kids.

7. Hidden Talent:

  • Ask everyone to share a hidden talent or something interesting about themselves that others might not know.

8. Best Advice Received:

  • Have team members share the best piece of advice they’ve ever received.

9. One Word Check-In:

  • Ask each person to describe how they’re feeling in one word and explain why.

10. Favorite Quote:

  • Have team members share their favorite quote and why it resonates with them.

Icebreaker Activities:

1. Picture Share:

  • Have everyone share a picture on their phone that they like and explain why they chose it.

2. Team Trivia:

  • Create a trivia game with questions about team members or company history.

3. Scavenger Hunt:

  • Organize a quick scavenger hunt where team members have to find items in their office desks and share them in the meeting.

4. Storytelling Chain:

  • Start a story and have each team member add a sentence to it, creating a collaborative and often humorous tale.

5. Desert Island Scenario:

  • Ask, "If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have three items, what would they be?"

6. Personality Quiz:

  • Have team members take a fun personality quiz and share their results.

7. Speed Networking:

  • Pair team members up for 2-3 minutes to have a quick chat before rotating to the next person.

8. Emoji Check-In:

  • Ask everyone to share an emoji that represents their current mood and explain why.

9. Talent Show:

  • Have a mini talent show where team members can showcase a skill or hobby.

10. Name That Tune:

These questions and activities can help create a fun and engaging atmosphere, promote team bonding, and encourage open communication during team meetings. It don’t have to be a long time, each time, just pick one to two questions/activities before the conversation, and the whole meeting will be lightened up by this little treat.
